Guide to PAT testing
A portable appliance test is the routine inspection of an electrical appliance to check it is safe to use and functioning correctly. Not all electrical items need to be PAT tested, but it is generally recommended for any appliance that has a plug attached to it that plugs into a wall outlet. Find out more below, where we’ve answered some of the most common questions that we receive from customers in and around Kingston about PAT testing.
Why do my appliances need to be tested?
PAT testing is an excellent safety precaution that ensures the electrical appliances in your domestic property are safe to use. It is a recognisable and cost-effective way for landlords and property agents to ensure their electrical appliances are safe to use by their tenants and members of the public who enter the premises.
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
PAT testing is not currently a legal obligation. However, as a landlord in the UK you have a responsibility under The Landlords and Tenants Act 1985 to make sure your property is ‘safe when a tenancy begins’ and ‘maintained in a safe condition throughout the tenancy’. If you fail to meet these obligations, for example if a tenant is injured due to a faulty electric appliance, severe penalties can be applied including a large fine and even imprisonment.
What does the PAT test involve?
Our PAT testing service includes the inspection of all electrical items fitted with a standard BS1363 plug. This generally includes appliances such as washing machines, microwaves, kettles, TV’s and toasters. Our electricians perform a visual check of appliances as well as inject test signals into the specific cable and appliance to ensure their integrity.
By using the latest testing equipment and methods, we are able to carry out the test quickly and efficiently for our customers in Kingston upon Thames and the surrounding areas.
Do I receive anything upon completion of the test?
Upon completion of the PAT test, our electrician will provide you with a certificate and detailed report that specifies the results of each appliance test, including a full list of any failed items and an explanation on reasons for failure.
How often do electrical appliances need testing?
There are no specific requirements for how often PAT testing should be carried out. HSE guidelines state the level of precaution taken depends on the type of equipment and the environment it is used in. For recommendations on specific appliance testing, do not hesitate to contact our electrical contractors for advice.
